Confessions of a Loser #1

Two weeks ago I finished my third Biggest Loser competition. I lost 23.8 pounds during the contest, bringing my total weight loss (since September 2012) to 40 pounds.

my before and after shots from the contest

That's a lot of weight, and it's definitely noticeable - my face is thinner in pictures, I feel muscle developing under my fat, and I'm fitting into smaller clothes. What might not be so noticeable are the changes that are currently taking place on the inside. Over the course of the weekly weigh-ins I have come to a startlingly deeper understanding of myself and have begun to change my personal philosophy of health and wellness. They say that hindsight is 20/20 so I'm looking back over the last few months and reflecting on some of the things that have come up. Things are about to get real, folks. I've organized my thoughts into a series of confessions, realizations, and responses. I just tried writing it all out in one post and it's way too long, so I've decided to break it up into more manageable chunks. So without further ado I present to you my first confession in a new series I'm calling Confessions of a Loser.

Confession #1: I joined the contest because I wanted to win. There, I said it. I was in it for the money. Sadly, it became obvious within the first few weeks that no matter how hard I trained and how clean I ate, I couldn't keep up with some of my "competition" and I didn't stand a chance of winning first place. Midway through I lost my motivation and allowed myself to slack off more than I care to admit.

Realization: With the money as my sole motivator and the knowledge that I wouldn't win, I had a hard time giving 100%. I played the comparison game. Because I was so stuck on my own "failure" (I was still losing weight!) I couldn't see and celebrate the victories around me. The other contestants made huge strides in losing weight and getting healthy but I was so stuck on myself that I wasn't able to cheer for or be an encouragement to anyone. I also had a difficult time recognizing my own victories.

Response: During "Season 2" of Kandern's Biggest Loser (which started yesterday!), my goal is to be intentional about encouraging the other contestants, who are my colleagues, neighbors, and friends. I will also make a point to recognize my own victories even if they don't look the same as someone else's.

Have you ever been motivated by the wrong rewards?

the cleanse

Recently I completed a seven-day cleanse, which brought up a lot of opportunities to talk about health and food choices. Because I was doing something so abnormal, I was constantly having to explain myself to people and for whatever reason felt the need to justify myself. I worried constantly about what people were thinking about me while I did my "crazy diet" because apparently I am still in middle school... but so many people have asked me to share what I did so I figured I would take some time to write it out.

Let me first preface this by saying that there are no secret potions or gimmicks here, it's just an all-natural way to clear out your system. I've found it to be highly effective in refreshing my palette and curbing some of my unhealthy cravings, and in the end I find that I actually begin to crave healthier things again. It works nicely as a "jumpstart" when you are first trying to get your healthy ball rolling, and it also gives you a nice boost if you're already working on healthy living and have reached a weight loss plateau that you're trying to break through.

The other disclaimer I must put out there is that this is NOT a sustainable "diet" nor should it become a regular way of life for you. Some "experts" will claim that you can do this as often as you'd like but it really is not wise to do this all the time. Your body needs a healthy balance of all types of food (yes, even fats and sugars - the right kinds!) and to deprive yourself of certain things for too long can be a bad idea in the long run. I did this once a year ago, then I did it twice this month with a few days in between of "normal" eating. The second time, I only went though day four simply because I really liked the fruit and veggie days. I don't have plans to do it again any time soon.

I first heard about this through a blog, but soon discovered that it has been around for about thirty years in various forms. My mom even found a copy of it in her health resources from years ago that she emailed me; it was literally a verbatim copy of the blog I'd been following. You will easily find detailed instructions by Googling the Sacred Heart Diet or the GM Diet or the Seven Day Cleanse - they are all slightly different and I think the key here is not to get so caught up in what you can or can't eat, but to just think about what you're putting into your body and stick to the general guidelines. If you follow it to the letter it is claimed that you can lose 10-17 pounds in a week, but bear in mind that is not all fat and you will almost definitely gain some of it back immediately after you return to "normal" eating. Also bear in mind that such rapid weight loss over a long period of time is unhealthy and should be avoided.

If you decide that you are going to try this, please do your research. Look at the different versions out there, find what will work for you, and make it personal. Don't just do what I did or follow a strict list of foods just because. Everyone's body reacts differently and what worked for me may not be as effective for you, or you may have better results. Also, be smart about it. You should never feel hungry during this time. If you are, you're doing it wrong. I continued doing my regular workouts during this time without any problems, but during the third round I did make the mistake of going for a 14 km run on day four. That was a really dumb thing to do and it could have ended very badly - the lack of protein and carbs left me weak and because I hadn't hydrated enough that day I didn't even sweat, even though the sun was beating down on me the entire time. Pay attention to your body and don't be stupid like I was.

So, the whole thing revolves around this Wonder Soup, which is basically your typical cabbage soup. I happen to hate cabbage, so all three times that I've done this cleanse I've done it without the soup. Only recently did I discover that there is a version of the recipe without cabbage. Huh. Others have said that the soup really does make a difference so if you can stomach it, go for it. The way I understand it, the soup is supposed to stimulate fat burn and fill you up without adding a lot of calories. Each day you are allowed unlimited servings of the soup and the flavor du jour - a specific category of food. Here's the breakdown:

Day 1: Fruits. In addition to the soup, you basically stuff your face with fruit. Melons are suggested for their high water content. The purpose of this day is to just fill you up with water and natural sugars to replace your junk food sugars. Since melons are hard to come by during the off season here in Germany, I stocked up on apples, grapes, kiwi, oranges, pineapple, and canned peaches. If you like you can make smoothies but don't add anything extra like yogurt or fruit juice. A year ago when I did this I managed to find a watermelon at Penny, but then I got so sick of eating it that I threw it in the blender and made watermelon juice. The only restriction today: no bananas. This year I started the cleanse a few days after my birthday, so while I was trying to enjoy my fruit, I had some very tempting birthday sweets sitting on my desk, staring me down. I'm proud to say I resisted!

Day 2: Veggies. Again, eat the soup and stuff your face with veggies, cooked and raw. Avoid corn and peas since they are more starchy than anything else. Leafy greens are strongly encouraged, but you are limited to something like a teaspoon of oil per day and the idea of dry salads didn't go over very well for me. I ate a lot of green beans, carrots, celery, avocado, and even broccoli! If you know me at all you know I've always hated broccoli so I was quite proud of the fact that I went through an entire bag of frozen broccoli! You are also supposed to have a "complex carb" in the form of a baked potato. I decided to up the ante and make sweet potato fries which were like a party in my mouth and a reward for having to eat so many veggies in one day. Spices and seasonings are ok but go easy on the salt - I used pepper, a dash of salt, and garlic with a few drizzles of olive oil. I may or may not have gone over my one teaspoon allowance...

Day 3: Soup, fruits, and veggies, but no bananas or potatoes. I started the day by making a massive smoothie with oranges, kiwis, berries, apples, cucumbers, and spinach. Just add some water for the consistency. I got two full Nalgene bottles of smoothie from that mix - one I drank for breakfast and the other I sipped throughout the day. For lunch I mashed up two avocados and tricked my brain into thinking i was enjoying guacamole by eating it with celery instead of chips. Dinner that night was hard since I was subbing at a dorm, but I came prepared - I filled two whole plates with peaches, apples, carrots, green beans, and cucumbers, and then had to explain to all the kids in the middle school house why I was eating that instead of the Sodexo they were eating. I didn't think I would be able to eat it all, but somehow I did. I was stuffed for sure, but it was a good feeling because I knew it was all healthy food.

My green lunch

Day 4: Soup, bananas, and milk. Today is when things start getting weird, and the different versions of this cleanse tell you different things. Eat somewhere between 3-8 bananas, and several glasses of skim milk. I think I ate around 5 bananas and went through two cartons of 1.5% milk, but that was easy because I love milk. You can substitute for almond or rice milk if you need to. I also added nuts at the suggestion of another person who had done the cleanse - so I ate a few handfuls of unsalted pistachios and peanuts for variety. I found today to be the hardest because of the lack of variety. Don't forget to drink your water on this day - I tend to slack off on my water on this day because of all the milk, but you still need to drink water. After I planned out my cleanse, I was informed that my birthday lunch at school was going to fall on the bananas and milk day. So that was a bummer but since I had already gotten my Chipotle burritos the week before, I was okay passing on the potato salad!

Day 5: Soup, beef, and tomatoes. Another weird day! When I tell people I'm eating beef during a cleanse they laugh... but I think at this point the idea is to start filling your body with good stuff. So pick lean beef, which you can have in the form of a steak or burgers or whatever. I've seen versions of this that suggest substituting chicken for the beef, but be sure there is no skin on the chicken! I'm not a huge fan of tomatoes so I get the canned tomatoes, mash them up with ground beef and fry it all into a beefy-tomatoey stew. This day fell on a Saturday for me, which ordinarily would have been fine except that my roommate and I had decided to host brunch for some friends. So, while everyone else feasted on waffles, eggs, and bacon, I sat at the table nibbling on a bowl of beef and tomatoes once again feeling the awkwardness of needing to justify my lifestyle choices. I craved waffles for days afterward because Lexi proceeded to make enough waffles to feed the entire city of Kandern, and I couldn't even have one!

Waffles for everyone but Rachel...

Day 6: Soup, brown rice, and vegetables. Again, filling up on the good stuff. So keep eating your leafy veggies. I think I ate rice for breakfast and then had veggies the rest of the day, including a huge tray of baked broccoli for dinner. Not a very exciting day, and by this point I was mentally ready to be done with the cleanse.

Day 7: Soup, brown rice, vegetables, and fruit juice. The only thing to watch here is that your fruit juice is 100% juice and not full of sugar.

Every day you should be drinking around ten glasses of water, and increase it by a quart on Day 5 because of all the acid in the tomatoes. Other beverages you can have are black coffee and unsweetened teas.

As my Biggest Loser friends know, I ended up losing 9.6 pounds while doing this cleanse. So is it effective? Yes. Is it a long term solution? NO. Everyone knows the secret to looking and feeling good is a healthy, balanced diet and regular exercise. So, not really a secret after all.

And yes, the first thing I ate after the cleanse was waffles -- and mocha coconut coffee. Yum. I never knew a waffle could taste so good!

Running Total Week 6

This was my last week of training before the Rock'n'Roll 10-Miler in Nice, and it was a great week for running! It started out on Monday with Megan and I running our last "long" run, which ended up being 15 kilometers. Based on the pace for that run, I figured I could expect to finish the Nice run (16 km) somewhere in the neighborhood of two hours. I was, once again, super exhausted following that run, but I strongly believe that doing long runs in the afternoon (after teaching all day) is much more taxing than my usual routine of long Saturday morning runs after a full night's rest.

Our final training run was a short one on Wednesday which actually ended up being rather discouraging and frustrating for me, but it is what it is. I knew my body was ready for the race, despite the crappy run I had that afternoon.

I'm going to write a separate post about the race because it was just that awesome. Check back tomorrow for all the juicy details! In the meantime, celebrate with me that I've now run more than 100 kilometers so far in 2014!!

WEEK 6
Monday: 15 km
Wednesday: 5 km
Sunday: 16 km at Rock'n'Roll Nice

2014 Running Total, Week 5: 116.95 km

Running Total Week 5

Last week was pretty stressful for me in terms of school and lesson plans/prep, but I was able to get back into a rhythm for running and working out after being away for several days. I didn't do any long runs this week, though we did extend one of our early morning runs by about 40%. Not much to report this week, though as I write this I'm feeling the burn of the 15km run I did last night with Megan in preparation for our Rock'n'Roll 10 miler in Nice, which is now mere days away!

WEEK 5
Tuesday: 5.3 km - finally hit an average 7 minute kilometer!
Thursday: 6.75 km - extended our route just to make things interesting

2014 Running Total, Week 5: 80.95 km

KBL Weigh-in: -4 pounds, and that's still not enough to be in the top three for the week?!

Running Total Week 4

Once again I only went out twice this week to run, and neither of them were with my regular running buddies or my usual routes. I had the awesome chance to run with my other running bestie, Megan. She's 4259 in the picture below. Since her role at BFA has changed, I see her much less often and finding time for our schedules to intersect is very difficult. This week was the first time we'd run together since September and as we set out for our first run together on Monday afternoon, it felt just like old times.

A miscommunication between us resulted in us running 13 kilometers that day! It actually felt pretty great, but I was WIPED.OUT afterwards, more exhausted than I usually am for a long run. I went to a dinner party at some friends' house, itching to replenish all the calories I'd burned that day with a delicious meal and celebrating my loss of 3.6 pounds that week. While filling my plate generously with fixings for taco salad I was suddenly overcome with a horrible feeling and knew immediately that I would not be cleaning my plate that night. Not wanting to draw attention to myself I asked my host and hostess if there was a place I could lie down for a few minutes, out of sight from the other guests. They graciously and discreetly ushered me upstairs to their guest room, gave me a glass of water, and told me I could stay as long as I needed. I curled up under the huge duvet feeling beyond miserable and wondered if I was finally coming down with the flu that had been going around...and woke up two and a half hours later to find that I'd completely slept through dinner. I was mortified, but again my hosts were so gracious and understanding, and obviously my body needed to recover (it ended up not being the flu, just exhaustion) so I'm thankful that they were so understanding and hospitable.

My second run that week wasn't nearly as exciting. Sadly my routine was interrupted a lot this week as I was away at a conference from Thursday morning to Sunday night and was completely overwhelmed preparing to leave beforehand. I'm looking forward to getting back into my regular routine this week, as my first race of the season, the Rock'n'Roll 10-miler in Nice, France, is two weeks away! I can't wait!!

WEEK 4
Monday: 13 km
Wednesday: 5 km

2014 Running Total, Week 4: 68.9 km

KBL Weigh-in: +2 pounds (which I don't understand at all, because I worked out extra hard while I was away on my conference and was super careful about what I ate. Needless to say I'm not happy.)

Running Total Week 3 and KBL Weigh-In

This week was slow. I only went out twice due to sick running partners, but the two times I did go were definitely worth it. One of our regular running paths takes us on a ten-kilometer loop through three neighboring villages, and is known for one very large hill near the end. I did this loop twice this week, first in the wee hours of the morning (and in the dark! crazy!) with my running bestie and then on a frigid Saturday morning with the full running crew. Surprisingly I did worse on the Saturday run even though I ran more, which must just mean my overall pace was slower. Sometimes running in the cold slows me down a bit...

WEEK 3
Wednesday: 10 km
Saturday: 10 km

2014 Running Total, Week 3: 50.9 km

I'm also going to keep track of my weight loss through Kandern's Biggest Loser in these posts. Today was the end of our second week and our third weigh-in. I'm proud to say that this week I lost 3.6 pounds, for a total of 6.6 pounds lost so far. Yay!

Running Total Weeks 1-2

Over the last year and a half I've come to grips with the fact that I'm a runner. In fact, in 2013 I ran in FOUR races totaling 57 km. One of those races was my first half marathon, which just so happened to run through three countries! However, without a goal to work towards, running bores me and I have no motivation to keep it up. So, this year I've committed to running in three different races that total 58 km. In a few weeks I'll be running in the Nice (France) Rock and Roll 10 miler (16 km), in May I'll run the Dreilanderlauf (three country half marathon) and in July I'll run the Chicago Rock and Roll half marathon.

Another goal I have for myself this year is to record the total number of kilometers I run. So in an attempt at accountability, I'll be posting about my weekly training runs on Mondays and also update the "running total". This is my second week of official training for 2014, but my first week of documenting it here on the blog.

WEEK 1
Tuesday: 5.3 km
Thursday: 5.3 km (with a very painful fall!)

WEEK 2
Tuesday: 5.3 km
Wednesday: 2.7 km (with my 8th grade boys! Fun!)
Thursday: 5.3 km
Saturday: 7 km

2014 Running Total, Week 2: 30.9 km

lunch prep: salads

As someone who thrives on consistency and routine, I've found that the best way to guarantee healthy eating during the school day is to plan and prepare ahead. When I leave my meals up to chance, like how I'm feeling that day or what's in my fridge, I will almost always overeat or eat unhealthily. I find that I'm also more prone to mindless snacking in the afternoons if left to my own urges.

That being said, one thing I do to avoid overeating is to prep my lunches for the entire week on Sunday afternoon. I think I developed this habit after watching my mom make fifteen sandwiches every week so that my dad, my brother, and I could easily pack our lunches. For me, my current lunch of choice is a big salad. I realize that having the same thing every day isn't very exciting and not everyone prefers this type of routine, and that's totally fine. I just prefer it this way because it makes shopping simple, and I really don't have to think about what I'm going to do each week. If I'm feeling adventurous I'll swap out new toppings or dressings, but generally my salads are pretty consistent from week to week.

So for anyone who cares, here is my lunch prep routine.

First, let's talk containers. I'm obsessed with organization and I value order and consistency, so after I developed my salad system, I went out and bought containers to be used specifically for this purpose. I use one large container to hold my salad and the toppings, but I like to keep things fresh by not mixing the salad until I'm ready to eat it. So, I put my toppings into smaller containers.

The large containers I use are 1-liter Lock and Lock boxes. After determining that this was my preferred shape and size, I bought a set of five from Amazon.

The small containers I prefer were purchased from Kaufland. They come in a pack of two and fit perfectly inside the bigger box, as you'll see at the end of this post.

Now that you've got your containers, let's talk food. For five salads, I use two packages of feldsalat, half of a block of feta cheese, and a roughly 400-gram package of chicken breast. For my Kandern friends, this all came from Penny.

I start by cutting the chicken into tiny cubes. As an aside, I usually grab the Hanchen Minutenschnitzel because it's thin and easier to cube. On occasion I've also been known to use the Puten (turkey). I cook the chicken in lemon or lime juice because it's my favorite, but you can use whatever seasonings you prefer.

After it cools, I divide the chicken into five small containers.

I then divide the pack of feta into ten equal sized pieces. As you can tell from the picture below, it's a rough estimate! I use five pieces for this week's salads, then I save the other five for the next week's salads.

Finally, I wash all the feldsalat and divide it among the five containers. Voila! Lunches for a week!

In the spring I often add fresh strawberries or peaches (yes, peaches!), and another favorite addition is Craisins. The Craisins definitely add more calories to this meal, so if you're counting, make sure to portion appropriately.

In terms of dressing, it's common knowledge that creamy dressings are higher in fat and calories. My current dressing of choice is a tangy balsamic!

According to MyFitnessPal this salad (greens, chicken, cheese) is worth 144 calories before dressing. You may wish to supplement with a grain such as Wasa Crispbread, fruit, or more veggies.
