Running Total Weeks 7-15

Ok, confession time - I have not kept up a regular running routine since the race in Nice (February!). I took a week off like I usually do after a big race, then March came through destroying everything in its path including my healthy habits. I didn't fall off the wagon altogether; in fact I have gone on several short and long runs, just not enough to justify weekly reports. I've kept track of them in my running journal but didn't think they were worth posting. So, this update encompasses several weeks' worth of runs and should get me all caught up. Why now? Because my next race (the three-country half marathon) is a little over a month away, and it's time to get back on the ball. My goal for the next six weeks is 3-4 runs per week, covering a minimum of 15 km and increasing my long runs each weekend. Here we go!

Project November Day 15

Day 15: Five weird things you like

The smell of crayons. It brings back memories of visiting my Grandma Forrider's house and cracking open her huge Tupperware container full of Crayolas so that my cousins and I could color together.

Shopping alone. During my first year after college, I did a lot of solo shopping since I had moved away from all my friends and family. It sort of turned into a routine. Now I prefer it over shopping with a crowd!

Vegemite. I had the chance to try this craziness when I visited Australia in 2005. I wouldn't necessarily eat it every day, but I enjoyed it more than my WCC girls did!

Wearing glasses. I've had to wear some form of corrective lenses since I was about two years old. When I finally got contacts in 11th grade, I thought I had finally arrived. But hard lenses are a hassle, and lately wearing my cute brown and turquoise glasses has been way more convenient than dealing with painfully dry eyes and putting drops in between every class!

Oral hygiene. I am incredibly vain about my teeth. I never had cavities as a child, and after my parents put a ton of money into my orthodontist, I decided I wanted to keep these pearly whites, well, pearly. So I brush and floss rather obsessively. And I LOVE my dentist. I've gone to the same dentist for my entire life!

P52 / 11 / green

This week I attended my very first St. Patrick's Day party. A couple from BFA hosted a green dinner, at which everything we consumed was green. The evening began with a walk around town where we found shamrocks with St. Patrick trivia written on them. Then, our meal was served in three courses:
  • Course 1: Salad, cucumber dressing, broccoli, cucumbers. Pretty normal, until you add in the green cheese (Wasabi gouda! You have to see it to believe it.).
  • Course 2: Here's where things start to get weird. Green noodles, Swedish meatballs in green sauce, and homemade sweet rolls with butter, both tinted the most magnificent shade of mint I have ever seen.
  • Course 3: Green applesauce, green cottage cheese, and green lemon bars.
The beverage of choice was "pond water" - apfelschorle (bubbly apple juice) tinted green.

It was a fun evening spent with people I don't have the chance to spend nearly enough time with!

*TMI: I was concerned that there would be awkward ramifications of consuming so much food coloring, but today everything appears to be normal. Just thought you should know. :)

#364: got milk??

Today is the last post for 2011 (even though it's being posted in 2012!). I've known for awhile now that my numbering is screwed up because obviously this post should be titled #365. I went though every post and couldn't find my mistake, so just go with me on this one.

We bought all this cereal in one shopping trip. Don't judge, it was on sale!! I might smuggle some of it back into Germany...

Happy New Year!

#361: deja food

Spotted Salsa Verde flavor at Wal-Mart tonight... haven't seen these for sale in years!! Of course I had to buy some, and I'm pretty sure they changed the recipe...

#306: oops.

Monday after school someone accidentally turned off the power strip, which the fridge was plugged into. Tuesday was a day off. Wednesday morning... we had to do this:

#281: welcome to the neighborhood

A month or so ago I unknowingly parked in my neighbor's spot on the street, which made him angry enough to tape a nasty letter to my windshield. Apparantly in Germany you can call dibs on public places because the next day, these lines were painted on the street.

#280: fall party

The middle school fall party theme this year: Movies.
The staff costume: Toy Story.
This photo: Epic.

#276: a day off

What do you do when you don't have school? Go to Switzerland and spend your life's savings on coffee, what else?!

#265: we think alike...

Katrina and I brought the same frozen meals to school today for lunch. We were pretty amused... it's ok if you're not.

#238: chillin' & grillin' & double feature

show&tell #238: chillin' & grillin'

double feature
That double feature defintiely needs an explanation. A game called Ultimate Ultimate uses the rules of Ultimate Frisbee, but with tons of other objects in play at the same time. Our middle school chaplain enjoys tossing in items such as a rubber chicken, a beachball, and gross things like hardboiled eggs, vegetables, and sausages. I actually watched an 8th grader take a bite out of the sausage in the middle of the game. No joke.

#236: ironic

Today the humidity broke and the rain came pouring down, just in time for our afternoon elective classes. Here the Outdoor Education class is getting their first lesson on dealing with the rain.

Today we were taken on a surprise hike by Phil Peters, BFA Director. It was, um... fun.

#228: here we go again

Most people make new year's resolutions, but I make new school year resolutions. And every year there's a running resolution. So today, a week before classes start, I went for my first run in months. It felt much better than I expected it to. My intention was to ease back into things with a 10 minute run but ended up going for over 20. Time to get into shape since I'm signed up to run in the Basel Marathon on September 11!*

show&tell #228: here we go again
*I am signed up to run 1/6th of the Basel Marathon, which actually only equals about 4.3 miles.
