Project November: Day 3

Day 3: A book you love

There are plenty of books that I "love." I really geek out over the Harry Potter series and have always been in love with the Chronicles of Narnia. And of course, where would I be without my Bible? But today I'm sharing something different. A sweet story that stirs my heart and literally gives me warm fuzzies when I read it.

“Stories are light. Light is precious in a world so dark. Begin at the beginning.
Tell Gregory a story. Make some light.”

via Amazon.com
The Tale of Despereaux by Kate DiCamillo is a book I read in college for my Methods of Teaching Language Arts class. Honestly I'd never heard of it before then. As soon as I picked it up, I couldn't stop reading. I fell in love with a mouse. The story goes something like this: in a far away kingdom several unrelated characters experience pain and loss, and then learn how to cope with a broken heart. Throughout the course of the story, their lives begin to intertwine and their stories connect.

“There are those hearts, reader, that never mend again once they are broken. Or if they do mend, they heal themselves in a crooked and lopsided way, as if sewn together by a careless craftsman. Such was the fate of Chiaroscuro. His heart was broken. Picking up the spoon and placing it on his head, speaking of revenge, these things helped him to put his heart together again. But it was, alas, put together wrong.”

“Pea was aware suddenly of how fragile her heart was, how much darkness was inside it, fighting, always, with the light. She did not like the rat. She would never like the rat, but she knew what she must do to save her own heart.”

A tiny mouse looking for a quest finds honor in being brave and pursuing a crazy love, a princess feels again, a rat seeks a different destiny for himself, a king smiles again, and a young orphaned girl is reunited with her father after years of painful separation. The power of a story, of love, of forgiveness... it's all here. Get yourself to the library and pick up this sweet read, I promise you won't regret it!

“Reader, you may ask this queston. In fact, you must ask this question. Is it ridiculous for a very small, sickly, big-eared mouse fall in love with a beautiful princess named Pea? The answer is yes. Of course it's ridiculous. Love is ridiculous. But love is also wonderful. And powerful.”

P52 / 21 / bittersweet

I only have one picture this week, because I went to the 8th grade dinner and awards ceremony with my camera but no memory card. Fail. It's ok, though, because this picture captures everyone's personality so perfectly!!

P52 / 21 / bittersweet
These are my precious eighth graders. I have had the privilege of teaching seven of them for all three years of middle school!! They've come a long way (and so have I) and now all of them are heading off to the wonderful world of high school. They bring joy to my life and challenge me to be a better teacher. I am so very proud of their accomplishments and growth, but so very sad that I no longer get to have them in class and see them everyday.

Pictures for week 20 come from my trip with the eighth graders to Lugano, Switzerland. Read about our adventures here.

P52 / 18 / up

This week Germany celebrated International Worker's Day, also known as May Day. The towns put up tall maypoles with decorations, then guard them all night long so nobody from another town can steal them. This week I inadvertently parked under the maypole a few days after the festivities, and when I looked up through the sunroof of my car, this is what I saw...

This week I had the privilege of chaperoning a high school field trip to Winterthur, Switzerland. The destination: Technorama! An incredibly awesome hand-on science museum that I have fallen in love with! Here are few shots from the day.

P52 / 15 / break, part 2

As you might have guessed, the second week of spring break was also uneventful. For whatever reason, it involved a lot of scrambled eggs. Do you see the face?

P52 / 12 / planning

This week during our study of polygons, I allowed my rambunctious sixth graders the opportunity to use Geoboards. This genius idea involves using rubberbands and pegboards to create shapes or designs. The downside is that students quickly turn the "geobands" into rubberband bullets. I gave them one warning speech about the dangers of doing this (ie, you give up your geoboard and get dot paper instead...boring!), and that was all it took. These pictures were taken after a quiz on Friday, when I gave the students time to simply "play" with the boards.

foody friday: fruit smoothies

One of my favorite things about spring is the fresh fruit that suddenly abounds, both in the fields and the grocery stores. I am slightly addicted to fruit smoothies, and after much trial and error have developed my go-to recipe, which only adds to the pleasantness of waking up to the sun on a warm spring morning. For someone who hates mornings, I love waking up to this.

For fun, I'm going to write the recipe in German since that was my homework for German class this week.

6 stueck erdbeeren
15 stueck heidelbeeren
1 banane
1 kiwi
100g joghurt
1 schluck orangensaft

Translation:
6 strawberries
15 blueberries
1 banana
1 kiwi
100g yogurt
1 splash of orange jiuce

P52 / 05 / cold

This week I chose a generic prompt from a list I found, which turned out to be very appropriate! Temperatures dropped and snow fell throughout the week, creating a winder wonderland here in Kandern. The top right pic in this collage is my car thermometer one morning (It says -6.5*C), but the temperature has been as low as -11*C at times!! BRR!!

The position for which I am most qualified - the sidelines!

Had my first McDonald's peppermint mocha today. The cup was happy to see me. (I know, you probably can't see the face, but it's there!!)

#358: SADCC Day 25: the infinity 2

Presenting the final scarf tie of the Christmas season!

show&tell #358: SADCC Day 25: the infinity 2

Merry Christmas! The final scarf tie was supposed to be the decoration, but I didn't have anything that could pass for the little brooch the girl uses in the video so I decided to just skip it (since it's identical to the fake knot) and do my own tie for the last one. I call this the Infinity 2 because it's almost identical to the Infinity. Using a rectangle scarf, tie just the corners together rather than the entire end of each side. It makes a much smaller knot and it causes more "drapery" on the final product.

#357: SADCC Day 24: the double rainbow

I managed to find two scarves that work together for the double rainbow... and at the end of my rainbow is a huge box of Lucky Charms!! Yay Christmas!!

#356: SADCC Day 23: the basic loop

This one seems an awful lot like the modern one loop from Day 5... another one of those that is too similar to truly call a different style, but whatevs. Only two more scarf ties to go!!

#355: SADCC Day 22: the shell roll

Eh, I don't really prefer this one... it's doubtful that I will tie my scarf like this after today.

And although it's hard to see here, I'm wearing my Christmas present to myself: this awesome shirt from Threadless that I've wanted for a long time (but my size was always sold out) and finally managed to snag during their $10 tees sale!! (In case you can't tell, it's a tribute to the four houses of Hogwarts. Recognizeable only by other nerds like me!)

#353: SADCC Day 20: the mira

Blech. It might have something to do with my scarf being too short and too narrow, but this one is just awful.

#351: SADCC Day 18: the waterfall...sorta

I tried to do the waterfall today, but my scarf is too short to wrap around twice. So, this is the modified waterfall. I almost like this better than the actual waterfall.

Yes, it's snowing in my living room. Today we got snow in Kandern for the first time! It was during church and they opened the blinds so we could see it softly falling while we sang.

Also, by now you have noticed my epic hat. Today was my Elf Party, wherein we watched the movie and partook in the four main food groups of elves: candy, candy canes, candy corn, and syrup. Well, we didn't have syrup so it wasn't a balanced meal...
